What Zola tables are made of
A Pangea is three materials, each chosen for the job it does:
- Frame and legs — industrial powder-coated steel. The structure is metal, not wood. That's where the stability and most of the weight come from.
- Rails — solid Malaysian oak. The perimeter you touch, lean on, and clamp accessories to is solid hardwood.
- Toppers and base panels — premium MDF with a premium oak veneer. Real oak over a dense engineered core.
The table is not solid oak, and we won't tell you it is. The wide flat parts are veneered panels, and that's a deliberate choice rather than a cost saving — see below.
They are premium, built-to-last pieces: heavy and dense, which is a large part of why they feel the way they do in a room. It's also why they ship by freight rather than parcel.
Why veneer on the wide parts
The toppers and panels are the one place a veneered core is genuinely the right call. A veneered panel is dimensionally stable, so precision-fit topper panels stay flat and stay aligned instead of moving with seasonal humidity. That stability is what lets the Table Topper Set drop in level, and what keeps the magnets seating properly over years of use.
Solid wood that wide would cup and swell with the seasons, and the magnetic fit would drift with it. A gaming table that relies on panels meeting flush is exactly the wrong place for a material that moves.
The rails don't have that problem — they're narrow enough that solid oak stays true, so that's what's used there.
Accessories are solid oak
The standard Pangea accessory line — including the standard Flex Tray — is solid oak, not veneer. Those pieces are small enough that movement isn't a concern, and they're handled constantly, so solid stock is the better material.
The Utility Series versions are the exception: that's the hard-wearing line built for cafés and high-traffic use, and it isn't oak. See Which accessories fit my table?.
Finishes
Two finishes are available across the Pangea line:
- Dark Walnut — deep and even
- Cerused Oak — open grain with lighter lines worked into it; the visible texture is intentional and part of the look
The Tavern Sit-Stand line comes in Smoked Walnut.
Component pieces — Table Topper Sets, panels — are offered in the matching finishes so a later addition still looks like it came with the table.
The Omnitrack rail
The magnetic perimeter rail around the play surface is the Omnitrack system. It's what cup holders, Flex trays, and Flex inserts snap into, and it's what adds about 3.25 inches (8.3 cm) per side to the overall footprint. See Playable size vs. overall footprint.
Caring for it
