Will my games fit?
The honest way to size a table is to measure the biggest thing you actually play, rather than starting from how many people are at it.
The numbers to measure against
The playable area — the recessed vault — is what your game sits in:

Lay out your heaviest game on whatever you use now — main board, player boards, card rows, the tokens that spread — and measure the whole footprint. That number, not the box size, is what needs to fit.
Roughly what each size handles
- 3×3 — most mid-weight boxes comfortably. Sized for dining nooks and compact rooms, seats 4.
- 3×5 — heavier games with player boards spread out and space that doesn't feel tight. Seats 6.
- 4×6 — the big sprawls: Twilight Imperium, Eclipse, large RPG maps, Warhammer. Seats 8–10, with room for each player's own area.
Two things people forget to include
Player boards spread outward. A game whose main board is 24″ square can occupy twice that once four players have their own areas laid out. That's usually what pushes people from a 3×3 to a 3×5.
The vault has depth. 2.5″ of it. Tall pieces, standing miniatures, and card holders sit in the recess rather than on a flat surface — so a game that feels cramped on a flat table often has more usable room here than the dimensions suggest.
The room is the other half
A table that fits your game still has to fit the room, with clearance for chairs. That's the constraint that decides it more often than the game does — see Will it fit my room?.
